We switched to a Brita Water Pitcher this winter and love it.  Trying to really cut down on plastic water bottles.  So I was happy to see this new coupon for  $4 off any 3-pk Brita Filters or a Brita Filter System

My Extreme Couponing Trip

I made a quick run to Shoprite tonight to get some things for school lunch tomorrow.  Grabbed a stack of coupons and my husband for company and off we went.  Got to the end of my shopping trip to discover that the market owed me 25 cents!  I agreed to leave the 25 cents and took home this stash of groceries for NOTHING.   (See the Hershey bars...that's my husband's influence). 

I also received a coupon for a gallon of free milk, so actually made money on this trip.

The staff at Shoprite was *so* nice and cheered my success!

Food Bank Donation

This past week I had $7 to spend for the American Red Cross Food Bank, since I underspent by $2 last week.  I got 4 boxes of crackers, ketchup, pasta sauce, 3 tuna packets, 4 boxes of instant coffee, 7 bags of rice, 2 jars of peanut butter, 2 jars of jelly and a bottle of dish detergent.  Whew--I'm tired typing it all! 

If you are starting to clean out your pantry for Passover, or just general Spring cleaning, please think about items that could be donated to the Food Bank. These are our neighbors and community members in need.

SPAMALOT at NJPAC

Wow--discount tickets for this show!  It's been my experience that NJPAC rarely offers their tickets at discount.   We saw Spamalot on Broadway and really enjoyed it.  I would consider it a 12 and up production...lots of gay and other sex jokes, which are meant ironically, but still...

There are $23 discount tickets for the Tuesday and Wednesday night 7:30 performances this week at NJPAC (as well as a Thursday matinee).   HOWEVER,  you can't buy them until 48 hours in advance.  So this is a heads-up to plan ahead if you are interested.

Trader Joe's Return Policy

Trader Joe's promises to take back any product, no questions asked.  After trying out their swedish pancakes, which got major thumbs down from my kids, I decided to return the open bag.  No problem, no questions...they gave me an immediate credit.  I was very impressed with the experience.

There are Trader Joe's products that we would *never* return.  We swear by their soy sauce...it really is better than the regular supermarket soy sauce.  The layered hummus also is fantastic.

4000 Hits and Growing

The Other Dr. Laura passed 4,000 hits a few days ago.  I hope folks are finding it helpful.  In many ways, I am still learning my way around.

One of the things I figured out this week is how to set up my blog as an email digest once a day.  On the right hand side of the blog page, there is a spot for signing up for email.  It now works! 

Another improvement I am attempting to make is labeling each post better on the bottom.  This will help if you want to search for specific deals.

Well, I couldn't find enough good stuff to spend my $5 on last week.  So I spent $3 and figure I have an extra $2 for this week's shopping.  We will see how I do.


So with my $3 for the Red Cross Food Bank, I got 4 bottles of laundry detergent, 2 jars of peanut butter, 2 jars of olives, 4 boxes of noodles and a bag of rice cakes (I bought these for my kids, who suprisingly didn't like the chocolate flavor).

Get Lost!

I'm tired of getting lost.  And my older car does not have a built in GPS.  So getting myself a GPS has been on the to-do list.  I was happy to come across this deal online today for a Magellan GPS for $40.  The same model is almost $80 on Amazon. I read the Amazon reviews and they are very positive, especially for techno-phobes.  So maybe I will be able to get from Summit Medical to Home Goods without getting lost now!

What I'm cooking this week: Chicken with Sun Dried Tomatoes

Shoprite has sundried tomatoes on sale this week..Nonna Mia 9oz for $2.49--a great price.  These are packed without oil and I found them in the produce section by the regular tomatoes.  Here is the recipe I made with them last night...this will be getting a repeat performance at my house, since everyone enjoyed it.  I used the crockpot, but I'm sure you could do the whole thing in the oven.

Chicken with Sun Dried Tomatoes
(adapted from Cooking Italian in the Crockpot)

3 1/2 pounds bone in chicken, skin removed
1/4 cup chopped sun-dried tomatoes
6 garlic cloves, sliced
3 large sprigs of fresh rosemary
1/2 cup dry red wine
2 tbs balsamic vinegar


Sprinkle chicken with salt and pepper.  Put in crockpot and and tuck the tomatoes, garlic and rosemary around the chicken pieces.  Measure your wine and add the vinegar to the cup.  Pour over the chicken.
Cook for about 5 hours or until chicken is tender.  I like to broil my crockpot chicken in the oven for the last 20 minutes, so I transferred to a dish for the oven.

The sauce this produces is tangy and delicious, so consider serving with rice or couscous.  And maybe some nice Italian bread.

One of the issues that has come up with the disaster in Japan is how to maintain older nuclear power plants.  A sociologist created this map recently and I thought it might be of interest.  Clearly, our part of the country is where older, and potentially riskier, plants are located.

Food Bank Donation

Finishing up my Sunday activities by putting together my weekly donation to the Millburn Red Cross Food Bank.  This past week, my $5 of dedicated shopping for the food bank resulted in 7 boxes of corn flakes, 1 box of oatmeal, 2 boxes of Shake n Bake, 4 cans of tomato sauce, 4 cans of evaporated milk, 2 packages of pasta, and 6 packages of macaroni and cheese.  Had to stack it high to get it all in this picture!

This week is all about St Patrick's Day corned beef (which I cant donate)..will post more later, including a great crockpot recipe.
